Getting away from it all and establishing your home away from the bustle of city life is the dream of many families. There is something about raising a family in a beautiful home in the suburbs that is often irresistible. However, this semi-isolation does carry a certain amount of risk along with it. Establishing a solid home security system should be a top priority for anyone in this situation. In many ways, you have to be more vigilant. Here are some ideas for making your home security apparatus strong.

1. Don’t shortchange yourself on locks. In some suburban neighborhoods, the idea of a dangerous character lurking nearby is almost laughable. For precisely this reason, many homeowners can let their guards down while handling the basics of a home security plan. Not only are they letting older locks go without being replaced, but they are falling into the bad habits of leaving doors unlocked when leaving for a short time period. Robberies are usually opportunistic, so don’t let carelessness leave an opening for a thief.

2. Set up a home alarm system with extra sensors. Living out in the suburbs means you are not going to have the same type of warnings when something happens. Neighbors are not just across the street or over the fence, ready to tell you that a major storm is brewing. For that reason, it is wise to get flood sensors and freeze sensors packed into your alarm system package. Before things get out of control, you will have adequate warning and be able to react.

3. Don’t let upper floors and backyard areas go ignored. Establishing a great perimeter security system will be on your mind, but it is smart to look out into the more unlikely points of entry. For example, though an upper floor’s windows may seem impossible to reach, you could be missing the trees which extend rather close to their ledges. An athletic burglar might be able to make the leap. On the other hand, if you ignore the fencing and other issues in your backyard, you might be allowing someone to get close.

4. Upgrade your alarm’s sound equipment. A home alarm will arrive from the manufacturer with the basic specifications. If you want to take it to the next level and have it function on a more professional scale, you should make some adjustments. One key point is the siren itself, which you may need to alert approaching police who are trying to locate your home. Upgrading the siren is simple but may prove to be one of the steps you are glad you took later on.

5. Check in with local police forces. You may be able to find out all you really need to know about security in your area with one simple stop at the local police station. Introducing yourself will never hurt, and in the meantime you might pick up some tips which could make your family safer in a matter of minutes.
